Well that's ok, I think we can all gather together because we're all fans of scifi and fantasy stories (I'm assuming at least...). I recently heard that the Stargate Atlantis movie was being canceled and it was pretty upsetting. That was probably my favorite scifi series after the new Battlestar Galactica. There are so many good scifi shows that were canceled before their time and I can't believe nobody is bringing them back! Firefly, Dollhouse, a good Stargate show/movie, and Andromeda! Ok, I can believe that they didn't bring back Andromeda, but it still makes me sad! Haha.

This made me smile. Though I don't know if Kingkiller could be done well in a visual format.

Mouette: I doubt it could be. And to be honest, I think it would be almost impossible to do in a movie. (If it were a TV show, I think that would be a little more achievable.) But still, the Kingkiller Chronicles are a story within a story that itself contains stories. It's a metafictional mystery wrapped in a post-modern puzzle wrapped in a fantastical enigma. That's part of the series' appeal, I guess.

And I bestow upon thee a slice of Damfine apple pie for catching the reference. That's my favorite quote from the series. (Although, the likelihood of a Legend of Zelda movie by Hayao Miyazaki is about as likely as me getting any one of those things…)

*nods* I agree. On top of all that, the in-frame story would suffer from not being in Kvothe's head - much like the Dany storyline in GoT is suffering right now in the show. (or has been so far - I'm only up to the 5th episode). A reader needs to be inside Dany's head, or Kvothe's, for much of the story to work - seeing it from the outside doesn't have the same effect. And how on earth would they do the music? Getting someone to write a Lay of Sir Savien that actually affects listeners as strongly as in the books would just be the tip of the difficulty iceberg.

Muahaha, thankee! Gotta love me those Damfine apple pies. *nomnomnom*. It's a fantastic quote. Though I think I prefer "Kist, crayle, and kote." It's such a good-sounding swear, I just wish I knew what kist and crayle mean. Maybe Rothfuss will let us know in book three? Here's hoping :P

Sigh... maybe I'll rererereread some nice Kvothe bits interspersed with my GoT watching/reading, to keep me sane from the GRRM's blatant need to torture me.

Well, I know "kist" is Siaru for "shit"… Don't know where in the books that is made explicit. (In more ways than one, I guess…)

Hmmm. "Kist" is also Lallans for "hoard" or "stash", so English, Lallans, and Siaru briefly converged in the 60s and 70s in sentences like "I've got a storage locker where I keep all my sh*t."

This really needs a Venn diagram.

    Merciful Tehlu…

You see what I've wrought? Now I think I've derailed this thread with one innocuous comment and made it into a fantasy linguistics thread. Since I guess this is my fault, then I'll get us back on topic:

The Stormlight Archive, by Brandon Sanderson. Yes, I get that there's only one book in the series so far (nine more are projected). But I loved the solitary book in the series (Way of Kings), and I think this book would do great as a TV show. For some reason, I want to see it as an animated series, because there's not enough serious (read: not funny/vulgar) animation for grownups on US TV. (Disregarding the masses of good anime that have come into this country from Japan. I'm talking about American animation.)

    Food for Venn:

'Kist' is also Dutch for 'chest' (the wooden box variety, that is).

Robin Hobb, assassin or ships trilogies, but as a miniseason - I don't think the plots would work as a film without massive editing.

As films... Maybe Weirdstone of Brisingamen by Alan Garner and Magician by Feist (although I'll admit to being in a minority when I say I'd rather it was just the one film, I don't think the immediate sequels live up to the first book, and the latter sequels won't make much sense without the background...
